Rajasthan Forts & Palaces Tour — 11 Days Through the Architecture of the Rajputs

Overview

Rajasthan is a museum without walls, and nowhere is that clearer than on a journey built around its forts and palaces. Over 11 days, this itinerary moves from Delhi into the heartland of former princely states, tracing a line of Rajput architecture from Jaipur's pink sandstone palaces to Jodhpur's cliff-edge Mehrangarh.

It is a tour for travellers who want to understand Rajasthan rather than simply see it. Between the great strongholds, you'll spend time in the Sufi shrine town of Ajmer and at Pushkar's lakeside Brahma temple, where the register shifts from royal to sacred. Udaipur brings lakes and mirror-inlaid palaces. Mount Abu — Rajasthan's only hill station — offers a cooler pause and the astonishing Dilwara Jain temples, some of the finest marble carving anywhere in India. The tour closes in Jodhpur, where the blue city unfolds beneath Mehrangarh and Umaid Bhawan looms from its sandstone ridge.

The pace is unhurried by design. You travel privately throughout — your own vehicle, a chauffeur who remains with you across the route, and a qualified local guide in each city. Heritage hotel upgrades are available wherever you would like to sleep inside the architecture itself.

Day Wise Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Delhi

Your driver meets you at Indira Gandhi International Airport and transfers you to your hotel. The day is kept deliberately light — time to shower, rest, and let the time-zone shift settle before the itinerary begins in earnest. If you arrive early and feel inclined, a slow walk through Lodhi Gardens at dusk is a gentle first impression of India. Overnight in Delhi.

Day 2 A Full Day in Old & New Delhi

After breakfast, the morning is spent in Old Delhi — the vast red sandstone courtyards of Jama Masjid, a cycle-rickshaw ride through the spice and jewellery lanes of Chandni Chowk, and a quiet stop at Raj Ghat, where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated. The Red Fort's exterior frames your route, and you may choose to enter if your energy holds.

In the afternoon, you shift to imperial and colonial Delhi. Humayun's Tomb — the Mughal prototype that would later inform the Taj Mahal — sets the architectural context for the Rajasthan route ahead. Qutub Minar, the soaring 12th-century victory tower, and a drive past India Gate and the Presidential Estate round out the day. Overnight in Delhi.

Day 3 Delhi to Jaipur

A morning drive of roughly five and a half hours on the Delhi–Jaipur expressway brings you to the Pink City. After check-in and lunch, the afternoon is yours — ideal for the Albert Hall Museum, Rambagh's gardens if you're curious about Jaipur's palace hotels, or simply a walk through the nearby bazaars to orient yourself. Overnight in Jaipur.

Day 4 Jaipur: The Pink City and Amber Fort

Morning begins with the short drive to Amber Fort, perched above a narrow lake at the edge of the Aravallis. You can ascend by jeep or by elephant — your guide walks you through the Ganesh Pol, the mirror-inlaid Sheesh Mahal and the carved marble apartments above. Jaigarh and Nahargarh crown the ridges above and can be added if time permits.

Afternoon is given to the walled city. The honeycombed façade of Hawa Mahal, the astronomical observatory of Jantar Mantar, and the City Palace Museum with its Mughal miniatures and royal textiles fill a leisurely three hours. A photo stop at Jal Mahal, set in the middle of Man Sagar Lake, closes the day. Evening is free for dinner at a local heritage restaurant. Overnight in Jaipur.

Day 5 Jaipur to Ajmer & Pushkar

You leave Jaipur after breakfast and drive roughly two and a half hours to Ajmer, where the Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti — the most important Sufi shrine in the subcontinent — draws pilgrims from across the Muslim world. Your guide accompanies you through the outer courts; the atmosphere is devotional and your time here should be quiet. You'll also see the Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra mosque, built from the remains of earlier Hindu and Jain temples, and Ana Sagar Lake.

A short drive of about half an hour takes you onwards to Pushkar, one of India's oldest pilgrimage towns. The evening aarti at the lakeside ghats is unforgettable. Overnight in Pushkar.

Day 6 Pushkar to Udaipur

Before leaving Pushkar, you visit the Brahma Temple — one of very few temples to the creator god anywhere in India — and walk the ghats that ring the sacred lake. After breakfast the drive to Udaipur begins, roughly five to six hours through the Aravalli range and open countryside. You arrive in the late afternoon with time for a slow evening by the lake. Overnight in Udaipur.

Day 7 Udaipur: The City of Lakes

The day is given to Udaipur's royal architecture. Morning begins at the City Palace, a vast complex of courtyards, balconies and mirror-inlaid chambers built over four centuries by the Mewar rulers. Jagdish Temple, Bagore Ki Haveli with its miniature painting collection, and Saheliyon Ki Bari — the royal ladies' garden — fill the rest of the morning.

The late afternoon is reserved for a boat ride on Lake Pichola, past Jag Mandir and the shimmering Taj Lake Palace, timed so you are on the water as the sun drops behind the Aravallis. Shilpgram, the rural arts complex, is optional for travellers interested in Rajasthani craft traditions. Overnight in Udaipur.

Day 8 Udaipur to Mount Abu

A relaxed drive of roughly four hours brings you from the lakes of Udaipur up into the Aravalli foothills and Rajasthan's only hill station. Mount Abu is cooler and greener than the plains — a welcome pause at this point in the itinerary. After check-in, a late-afternoon walk around Nakki Lake and a visit to Sunset Point are the classic first impressions. Overnight in Mount Abu.

Day 9 Mount Abu to Jodhpur via Dilwara

Morning is the centrepiece of the day — the Dilwara Temples. Built between the 11th and 13th centuries, the five marble shrines contain some of the most intricate stonework in India: ceilings, pillars and lotus pendants carved with a delicacy that seems impossible in stone. Photography is not permitted inside, which helps preserve the atmosphere.

After the temples you drive onwards to Jodhpur, roughly five to six hours. You arrive in time to settle in before dinner. Overnight in Jodhpur.

Day 10 Jodhpur: Mehrangarh and Umaid Bhawan

A full day in the Blue City. Morning is given to Mehrangarh Fort, widely considered the most dramatic in India — a 150-metre cliff crowned by walls, battlements and a palace museum that houses one of the finest collections of Rajput armoury, textiles and howdahs in the country. Allow three hours here.

Jaswant Thada, the milk-white marble cenotaph of Maharaja Jaswant Singh, follows, then Umaid Bhawan Palace — part museum, part working royal residence, part Taj hotel. The late afternoon is free for the Sardar Bazaar clock-tower area and the Bishnoi craft villages on the city outskirts, both excellent. Overnight in Jodhpur.

Day 11 Departure from Jodhpur

After breakfast, your driver transfers you to Jodhpur airport or railway station for your onward connection. If you would prefer to connect via Udaipur or Delhi, we can arrange the internal flight and an assisted terminal transfer at the other end.

How This Tour Differs from Our Royal Rajasthan Itinerary

We offer several Rajasthan routes and are often asked which is the right fit. The Royal Rajasthan Tour is a 9-day first-India itinerary that includes the Taj Mahal and Agra. This Forts & Palaces Tour is longer (11 days), skips Agra entirely, adds Ajmer, Pushkar and Mount Abu, and is built around architecture rather than the first-timer's bucket list. If you have already seen the Taj Mahal or simply prefer a pure Rajasthan experience, this is the tour we would recommend.

Best Time to Take This Tour

The ideal window is October to March, when Rajasthan is cool, dry and sunlit. Mount Abu, being at altitude, can be chilly in December and January — bring a warm layer for early mornings and evenings there. The Pushkar Camel Fair usually falls in late October or early November and is worth aligning your dates with if you can; the town transforms entirely. February and March are particularly beautiful in Udaipur and Mount Abu. The tour operates from April to June as well, though daytime heat in Jaipur, Ajmer and Jodhpur climbs sharply; monsoon months (July to September) soften the landscape and suit travellers who enjoy dramatic skies and fewer crowds.

Day Wise Itinerary

Is the Rajasthan Forts & Palaces tour private?

Yes, it is fully private from start to finish. You have your own vehicle, your own chauffeur who travels with you across the full route, and a qualified local guide in each city. Nothing is shared with other groups, and the pace can be adjusted day by day.

How does this tour differ from the Royal Rajasthan Tour?

The Royal Rajasthan Tour is our 9-day first-India itinerary and includes Agra and the Taj Mahal. This 11-day Forts & Palaces Tour skips Agra entirely, adds Ajmer, Pushkar and Mount Abu, and is built around architectural depth rather than the classic first-time-India sights. If you have already seen the Taj Mahal, this is usually the better choice.

Do we have to include Ajmer and Pushkar?

No. They are included because they add a meaningful spiritual and cultural counterpoint to the fort-and-palace core, but if you would prefer to skip them we can reroute directly from Jaipur to Udaipur and use the saved days to extend Udaipur, add a night at Deogarh, or include Ranakpur.

Is Mount Abu really worth the stop?

For travellers interested in architecture, yes — almost entirely because of the Dilwara Temples, which are among the finest examples of Jain marble carving in India. Mount Abu also gives you a cooler, quieter pause in the middle of the itinerary, which matters after the pace of the preceding cities. Travellers not drawn to temple architecture can swap Mount Abu for an extended Udaipur or Ranakpur.

Can we stay in heritage or palace hotels?

Yes. The standard package uses well-reviewed 4-star hotels, but upgrades to heritage properties are available in every city — Samode Haveli or Rambagh Palace in Jaipur, Deogarh Mahal or Shiv Niwas in Udaipur, Raas or Umaid Bhawan in Jodhpur. Pricing adjusts accordingly. We recommend a mix rather than all-heritage, since the experience is more varied that way.

Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to India?

It can be, but most first-time visitors prefer to include the Taj Mahal on their first trip, which makes our Royal Rajasthan Tour a better fit. This tour is at its best for travellers on their second or third India trip, or those who have seen the Taj Mahal on a previous visit.
